Gas Managed Learning Programme (MLP) Courses for Birmingham & the West Midlands
Embarking on a gas-managed learning programme (mlp) is the first step to becoming a certified gas engineer and combines classroom-based learning and practical assessment.
Elite Training & Assessment offers this Gas Foundation training programme to new entrants, which has been designed to address the needs of the gas industry and is set out in IGEM/IG/1 “Standards of Training in Gas Work and the Gas Training Specification”.
The curriculum is structured to ensure adequate learning is undertaken in a classroom environment first to understand the key principles. Then the trainee will be required to collect on-site evidence at a later stage. We welcome applications from far and wide, from school leavers to mid-lifers wanting to change direction in their careers.
Accredited Gas MLP Courses
The classroom-based activity will feature structured learning, which includes both relevant practical and written assessments to demonstrate both understanding and application of knowledge in each key area of gas safety and/or related activities such as safe isolation, basic health, and safety etc.
After successful completion of the Foundation Gas Training Course, the trainee is eligible to enrol for Initial ACS assessment. Then on completion of the ACS assessment, trainees can then register with Gas Safe.

The minimum guided learning hours 280 of the course GLH ( 10 weeks )
The course consists of 14 different modules. This has been broken down into three stages below:
Stage 1: The trainee will embark on both theory and practical learning in the centre, supported by home study.
Stage 2: On-site work experience is completed under the supervision of their Gas Safe registered Company/Engineer. The duration to complete the portfolio depends on the trainees’ own experience. On-site portfolio service is also available at an additional fee if required.
Upon successful completion of the Gas Foundation Training course, including the Portfolio, the trainee can apply for Stage 3.
Stage 3: ACS Domestic Core Gas Safety CCN1 and required Appliances Initial Assessment. Once the trainees have completed an initial ACS Assessment they can now apply for their Gas Safe Registration. Please note stage 3 is not a part of this package.

- Basic introduction to asbestos training, manual handling and working at height
- Basic fire safety training
- Fundamentals of central heating systems, controls etc.
- Fundamentals of cold and hot water supply systems including water regulations, energy efficiency and legionella management
- Properties of gas
- Characteristics of combustion and flue gas analysis
- Gas safety legislation and unsafe situations, emergency notices and warning labels
- Safe isolation
- Operations and identifications of gas safety devices and controls
- Gas pressures and Gas rating
- Tightness testing and purging including low & medium pressure and
- Ventilation
- Gas pipework design, installation and fittings
- Chimney/flue Design, recognition and testing (flue flow test, spillage test etc.)
- Re-establish existing gas supply and relight method
- Heating controls S & Y Plans (optional)
- Domestic appliances – central heating boilers, water heaters, cookers and gas fires etc
Whilst a basic understanding of maths and English is desired, there are no formal entry requirements to embark on this gas mlp course.
